Microneedling: What It Actually Does — and Who It's For

If you've been scrolling through skincare content lately, you've probably seen microneedling mentioned more than once. It's one of the most talked-about treatments in aesthetic medicine right now — and for good reason. But with so much noise online, it can be hard to separate the real results from the hype.

At Beautification Med Spa in Concord, CA, microneedling is one of our most requested treatments. Here's an honest, thorough look at what it does, what to expect, and whether it's the right fit for your skin.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling — also called collagen induction therapy — is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a device with fine, sterile needles to create thousands of tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the skin's surface.

That might sound counterintuitive. Why would you want to injure your skin?

Because your skin's healing response is incredibly powerful. When it detects those micro-channels, it immediately kicks into repair mode — flooding the area with growth factors, increasing collagen and elastin production, and accelerating cell turnover. The result, over a series of treatments, is skin that's measurably firmer, smoother, and more even in tone and texture.

What Microneedling Can Treat

This is where microneedling really earns its reputation for versatility. It's clinically shown to improve:

Texture and pore size Microneedling smooths rough, uneven texture and visibly reduces the appearance of enlarged pores — one of the most common concerns we hear at our Concord med spa.

Fine lines and wrinkles By stimulating new collagen, microneedling softens fine lines around the eyes, mouth, and forehead. It's not a replacement for neuromodulators, but it works beautifully alongside them.

Acne scars This is one of microneedling's strongest applications. The controlled injury-and-repair cycle helps break down scar tissue and remodel the skin, gradually improving the depth and appearance of atrophic (pitted) acne scars.

Hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone The accelerated cell turnover helps fade dark spots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), and sun damage over time — especially when paired with topical brightening serums applied during treatment.

Skin laxity While not a substitute for more aggressive tightening treatments, microneedling does improve mild-to-moderate skin laxity by rebuilding the collagen matrix that gives skin its structure and bounce.

Stretch marks Microneedling can be used on the body as well as the face, and it's one of the more effective non-surgical options for improving the texture and color of stretch marks.

Standard Microneedling vs. RF Microneedling: What's the Difference?

At Beautification Med Spa, we offer both standard microneedling and Quadessy RF Microneedling — and patients often ask which one they need.

Here's the key distinction:

Standard microneedling uses mechanical needle penetration alone to trigger the healing response. It's excellent for texture, tone, fine lines, and acne scars — and it's appropriate for most skin types and tones, including darker complexions.

RF (radiofrequency) microneedling delivers radiofrequency energy through the needles at the point of penetration, adding a thermal component to the treatment. The heat targets the deeper dermis and subcutaneous tissue, producing more significant collagen remodeling and skin tightening. It's particularly effective for laxity, deeper wrinkles, and body treatments.

In general: if your primary concern is texture, tone, or acne scars, standard microneedling is a great starting point. If skin tightening or more dramatic collagen remodeling is the goal, RF microneedling is worth the upgrade.

Not sure which is right for you? That's exactly what a consultation is for.

What to Expect: Before, During, and After

Before Your Appointment

In the days leading up to your microneedling session, you'll want to:

  • Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids (AHAs, BHAs), and active vitamin C for 3–5 days prior
  • Stay out of direct sun and avoid tanning
  • Come to your appointment with clean, product-free skin
  • Avoid blood-thinning supplements (fish oil, vitamin E, aspirin) if possible — these can increase bruising

During the Treatment

A topical numbing cream is applied 20–30 minutes before the procedure, so most patients find the treatment very tolerable. The microneedling device is passed over the treatment area in a systematic pattern. You may feel warmth, pressure, or a mild scratching sensation — but significant pain is uncommon.

Depending on the area being treated and the depth of penetration, the procedure itself takes 30–60 minutes. A soothing serum or growth factor solution is typically applied immediately after to support healing.

After Your Treatment

Expect your skin to look and feel like a mild-to-moderate sunburn for 24–48 hours. Redness, warmth, and minor swelling are completely normal. Some patients experience light peeling or flaking in the days that follow as the skin turns over.

You'll want to:

  • Avoid makeup for 24 hours
  • Use only gentle, fragrance-free skincare for the first few days
  • Apply SPF diligently — your skin is more photosensitive post-treatment
  • Skip the gym and avoid sweating heavily for 24–48 hours
  • Hold off on retinoids and actives for 5–7 days

When Will You See Results?

Some patients notice an immediate glow from the increased circulation and serum absorption. But the real results — the collagen remodeling, the texture improvement, the scar fading — develop gradually over 4–6 weeks as your skin rebuilds.

For optimal results, most patients benefit from a series of 3–6 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Maintenance treatments every 3–6 months help sustain and build on your results.

Is Microneedling Safe for All Skin Tones?

Yes — this is one of microneedling's significant advantages over some laser treatments. Because it doesn't use heat or light energy, standard microneedling carries a very low risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and is generally considered safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types, including deeper skin tones.

That said, there are some contraindications. Microneedling is not recommended if you:

  • Have active acne breakouts in the treatment area
  • Have a history of keloid scarring
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have certain skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, rosacea in active flare)
  • Have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) within the past 6 months

A thorough consultation will help us determine whether microneedling is appropriate for you and which protocol will deliver the best results.
